Toivo Tulev Be lost in the call
Schnittke’s Requiem is still one of the most important songs written in the Soviet Union and was composed precisely at a time when sacred music was prohibited. Written as stage music for Schiller’s play Don Carlos, this Requiem was camouflaged in order to emerge as one of the most beautiful and moving sacred works of the 20th century. The connection between the text and the music creates an intense drama, heir to the rhetoric of the Baroque.
The latest version of the Marian antiphon Salve Regina by the Estonian composer Erkki – Sven Tüür has a ritual character of deep spirituality in its ancestral characteristics. These qualities are also present in the compositions of Toivo Tulev, namely in the connection between the tradition of liturgical music from the West and the perennial sounds we associate with the East.
